Denise Stahl, The Curious Kansas Quilter, was our presenter for September. As her sobriquet suggests, Denise has focused her quilting on experimenting with a variety of techniques, fabrics, patterns, and quilting styles. In addition to quilting, Denise loves to travel, but with an added goal in mind. She has self-designed a quilt for every state that she has visited with a focus on depicting what she sees in each state. The gallery showcases some of these completed quilts. One of Denise's treasured stops was in Boykin, Alabama, at the Gee's Bend Museum, so you see the beginning of her replica quilt. Of course, you will see a Kansas quilt with a variety of blocks with a Kansas theme, followed by a photo of its fun backing. As mentioned, Denise's curiosity leads to experimenting with a versatile variety of techniques: machine embroidery and quilting, incorporating table linens, uniforms or selvages, raw edge applique', Ricky Tim's rhapsody, foundation piecing, thread painting, and other fiber art techniques. Now, don't you feel challenged to try something new?! Denise held an afternoon workshop focused on the table runner or wall hanging pattern "Twilight," by Annette Ornelas, the owner and designer at Southwind Designs. Targeted skills to be learned were how to make curves with no piecing by folding over and top stitching a bias edge; how to make a beautiful top stitch; strategic placement to achieve a desired finished look. Each participant in the workshop completed one "lantern" block. We look forward to seeing a variety of Twilights at future Show and Shares. | Twilight Table Runner |
