Konza Prairie Quilters' Guild |

Kathy Menzie wowed us with over three dozen raw edge applique' quilts. "Her magic with raw edged applique' really deserves to be viewed up close to appreciate the incredible amount of detail and number of colors she incorporates into her works." Alison McCullough Kathy was a sewist from an young age, but she could not get enthused about the tissue-paper patterns favored by her mom and sister. It was after she was gifted a book on landscape quilts that Kathy found her stitching niche. As travel enthusiasts, Kathy and her husband have traveled in Europe and Egypt, but many of her inspirations have come from their journeys across the U.S. or simply in Topeka and Kansas. Her show included scenes from National Parks as well as simple objects viewed while driving around: an old barn or house, a hay bale, a canoe, and of course, Kansas prairies, sunflowers, and sunsets! Kathy is an engaging and humorous presenter as evidenced by her story of the quilt of her son and grandson. The puzzle of how to create an adaptation of her grandson's long curly hair was solved with the purchase of a Barbie at a thrift store. Yes, that bald Barbie's hair now adorns her grandson's head in a quilt. As you gaze at some of Kathy's creations, look for a red cardinal that she likes to hide in her quilts. Zoom in to note the detail in her quilting.
