Unfortunately, Chris Schulte was unable to be with us due to illness. We wish her good health and happy stitching time in the days ahead! Our cool, calm, collected, and creative Program Chairs, Betty Frank and Melody Day, put together a wonderful substitute program on short notice that included a blend of laughter and learning. Incorporating technology, these ladies shared an AI (Artificial Intelligence) song about Sewing in Kansas, played a competitive team game, viewed the video "Is It Art or Craft?", took a quiz about "Fabric Addiction Problems and How Stash Happens" (although this does not apply to any of us), and closed with a video of "100 Ways to Hide Your Stash."  Thank you for your quick, creative thinking, Melody and Betty! And thanks to IT support from Ron!

The video that was shared is from a PBS Series called "Why Quilts Matter?" What follows is a description and the link to the website if you missed the program, but would like to watch the video or explore some of the other programming in this series.

  • What Is Art?

You think you know art when you see it, but this episode of Why Quilts Matter may make you think again. Turns out the quilt is the perfect test case for a dozen theories about what makes art, well.... art. Take the art vs. craft debate: As a domestic object made by women for a practical purpose the quilt falls squarely into the 'craft' category, and a humble one, at that. But do some quilts become 'art' when exhibited, like paintings, on a museum wall? Which ones? The plot thickens when we consider the claims of 'art quilts' made solely for exhibition. Are they art-not craft--just because their makers say they are, and how do we know, anyway? Who knew that it takes a soft cover to define a tough concept? Join host Shelly Zegart and crew as she explores "what is art?"
