March Show and Share

We often take for granted what seems to effortlessly occur at each of our meetings. However, our Hostess Committee plans and prepares tableware and decor to coordinate with holidays or monthly events, arrive early, stay late, and deserve a huge shout out from the guild. Let us raise our favorite scissors and hoop it up as a toast to Pat Zimmerman, Dee Gerardy, Cindy Kahrs, and Jewel Christopherson for all they do to prepare a cheerful and inviting table of refreshments that have been prepared by guild members each month!

Now to the sharing of quilts and bags and wall hangings and fortuitous finds for future quilts.

-Donna Dawson's completed 2025 BOM features red and white fabrics with a Valentine's theme.

-Carol Pacey put fabric that she found at a Pottorf Hall craft sale to good us in filling this quilt with colorful squares and yo-yo shapes. In addition, Carol made a Tarzan themed quilt for a grandson.

-Ronna Robertson followed Carol, crediting her with the patterns for the fun paper-pieced birds from the 2001 BOM. Ronna embellished this bag with her sweet tweets. Ronna was also demonstrating weaving on a small loom to Ginny B. and Lori G.

-Vickie Greenwood's quilt was made at a workshop using Candy Grisham's Blue Onion pattern. Each of these contrasting, but complementary fabrics are layered together just like the layers of an onion.

-Milly discovered a collection of red and white checkered blocks in an old family trunk. What should she make from them? To begin with, she is hand quilting a few while planning a larger project.

-Lori Gray's Koala quilt is made from the Charlie Harper collection of animal patterns. Don't you just want to hug these sweet little marsupials? Lori also shared a small wall hanging of a poinsettia and another vertical hanging quilt with beautifully, detailed applique'.

-Laura Soelter's cranes and fish on a vibrant royal blue background was a challenge quilt when she was in the Abilene guild.

-Carla Williams' lovely quilt is from the Friends of Aunt Grace sampler series. Be sure to zoom in on this image to appreciate the detail.

-Nancy Hubbard's quilt came with a delightful story. Nancy's Heritage Quilt was begun in 1972 when she was a newlywed. However the purchase of 12 Elsa Williams floral patterns at an expense that her new husband had not anticipated caused a bit of marital stress. With that resolved, Nancy started the hand work of traditional embroidery and crewelwork on wool, but when family, work, and life responsibilities expanded, the timeline for completion of her project grew longer and longer and eventually forgotten. In recent years, Nancy resumed this challenge, completed the embroidery and contemplated how to set and preserve the blocks of flowers. They are now surrounded by ivory and taupe wool sashing and painstakingly hand quilted by Nancy. Wow, what an accomplishment and a family treasure...indeed a Heritage Quilt!

-Jody Cheatum made good use of her time while she was hobbled with recovering from a knee replacement. This ever-useful bag was a quilt-as-you-go project that had been on the back burner for a while. The peach, cream, and green table runner was made from Shop Hop fabric from a previous year's journey. As a fan of Elizabeth Hartman designs, Jody whipped up a couple of cute animal hangings, then tackled the more intricate, but adorable polar bear quilt. Quilting is truly therapy!

-Michelle Crisler shared two dinosaur quilts. The first was actually made by Sharon Johns as a Quilts From the Heart, but it will first hang during the dinosaur exhibit at the Flint Hills Discovery Center in April.  Michelle was inspired to make her dinosaur quilt by the children's book Dinotopia; the quilt features a center panel surrounded by various smaller dinos.  This quilt will be offered as a raffle to any FHDC guests for the duration of the exhibit.

-Vickie Greenwood shared a quilt that was another Quilts From the Heart donation. This quilt features a unique method of cutting apart and setting the pieces of a panel. Would this unknown quilter please let Vickie know your identity as she has a plan for you at a future Sew Day. :)
